Will pests like rats or cockroaches get into my container?

Our containers are built to keep pests out. At Sunshine Self Storage, every container is airtight, waterproof, dust-proof and vermin-proof, with thick rubber door seals that close tight around the doors. That is a real advantage over sheds, garages and some older storage buildings, where mice and cockroaches find a way in through gaps.

Keeping pests out is a shared job, though. Most pest problems in storage start with what goes in. So never store food, pet food or anything perishable, which is not allowed anyway. Make sure goods are clean before they go in, and check for crumbs in kitchen cupboards, couches and lunch boxes. Don't store dirty bedding or clothes. Use sealed boxes or tubs rather than open bags, and avoid old cardboard that has been sitting in a damp garage.

Our standard storage agreement asks that stored goods are dry, reasonably clean and free of vermin, mould and food scraps. That rule protects your belongings and every other customer's.

Keep your doors closed while you load, and shut them properly when you leave so the seals do their work. On long stays, visit now and then to check things over, and tell us if you notice anything.
