Home / She Sheds
Every woman deserves a She Shed
And yes, we've got one for you too!
The sewing machine lives on the dining table. The craft supplies are in every cupboard. The furniture you're going to paint one day is in the garage, next to his stuff. Sound familiar? Maybe it's time you had a shed of your own.
Your own She Shed: back the ute up to the doors, unload, and everything is where you left it.
What's a She Shed?
A She Shed is the answer to the man cave: a space that's yours, for your things and your projects. The name took off in the early 2000s, and Erika Kotite's 2017 book She Sheds: A Room of Your Own filled its pages with art studios, sewing rooms and potting sheds.
Australia has caught on too. In 2021 EasyShed, one of the country's big backyard shed makers, said it was seeing "a huge uptake of women buying sheds" and turning them into home offices and studios. And there are now Women's Sheds, run the same way as the Men's Sheds: the Huon She Shed in Tasmania was the first, and Canberra's Women's Shed has just moved into a permanent home.
You might need a She Shed if...
Tick more than two and we should talk.
- Your fabric stash has its own wardrobe
- The garden pots and potting mix are in the laundry
- There's a dresser in the garage waiting for its makeover
- The Christmas decorations take up the whole spare room
- Your market-stall stock is stacked in the hallway
- You've been told the garage is "his"
What goes in a She Shed?
Whatever you like, within the rules. Here's what we see most.
Craft and sewing supplies
Fabric, yarn, the sewing machine and the overlocker, with shelves so you can see it all. No more digging through the linen press.
Furniture projects
The op-shop finds and the hand-me-downs you're going to sand back and make beautiful. Store them here until you're ready.
Garden gear
Pots, tools, the wheelbarrow and the bags of mix, out of the laundry and in one place.
Market and small business stock
Selling at markets or online? Keep the stock, stall and display gear together. See small business storage.
Seasonal and keepsakes
The Christmas tree, the Easter baskets, and the boxes of the kids' things you'll never part with.
Your own workspace
Want to work on projects in the container, not just store them? Ask us. With our written permission, you can.
Why a shipping container makes the best She Shed
No backyard build, no flat-pack instructions, no losing half the lawn. A container at Sunshine Self Storage is ready the day you move in.
Built tough
Shipping containers are made to cross oceans. Ours are steel, watertight and dust-proof, and nearly all of them are new one-trip containers.
Drive right up
Back the car, van or trailer right up to the doors and unload. No lifts, no trolleys, no corridors.
Only you hold the key
You bring your own padlock, so nobody else gets in. Not even him. You also get your own access card and alarm code for the yard, behind our security layers.
Three sizes
A 10ft container suits a craft room's worth of supplies. A 20ft is about the size of a one-car garage, and a 40ft is the big one.
Your shed, your hours
Access to the yard is available from 5am until 9pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Need in earlier or later? Give us a day's notice and we'll arrange it, at no charge.
Easy to stop
Three months minimum, then month to month. When you don't need it any more, give us 30 days' notice and you're done.
Setting up your She Shed: the straight answers
We'd rather tell you now than have you find out later.
- Working in it, not just storing? You need our written permission first. More on workshops
- There's no power or lighting as standard. Bring battery lights and tools. If you need power, talk to us and we can arrange it. More on power
- Some craft supplies can't be stored. No paint thinners, solvents, oil-based paints, aerosols or anything flammable. Lithium-ion batteries, and anything containing one, go home with you too. More on what can't be stored
- Mind the summer heat. There's no climate control. Candles, wax, artworks and anything else that melts or warps in heat may be better kept at home.
- Nothing is left outside your container. Work inside it, and take your offcuts and rubbish home.
- The basics: no deposit and no setup fee. See our facility rules for the full list.
