Can I store my car in a shipping container?

Yes. Some of our 20ft and 40ft containers at Sunshine Self Storage in Albion are car containers, placed so you can drive a car straight in. A 20ft car container fits one car and costs $299 a month. A 40ft car container has room for one or two cars and costs $580 a month. Car containers cost the same as standard ones, and you can use one for ordinary storage too.

A container beats the driveway. It is airtight, waterproof and dust-proof, with thick rubber door seals, so your car stays out of the sun, hail and rain. It is locked behind your own padlock in an anti-theft lockbox, inside a card-access yard with monitored alarms. And you can take it for a spin whenever you like between 5am and 9pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

A few tips. There is a 70mm lip between the ground and the container floor, so bring ramps or a couple of chocks of wood. Reverse in, so the battery is easy to reach. Change the oil first, leave the handbrake off with the wheels chocked, and use a breathable car cover, never a tarp. Put an oil tray under the engine, because cleaning fees may apply if oil leaks onto the floor.
