Do I need to tell you what I'm storing in my container?

Generally, no. At Sunshine Self Storage, you don't hand us a full inventory, and we don't go through your container. Your container is locked with your own padlock, and only you hold the key. Under our standard SSAA storage agreement, we are not treated as knowing what is in your container.

In return, the agreement asks you to promise a few things. You own the goods, or have the right to store them. You know what is in your container. Nothing in it is prohibited. That rules out anything hazardous, illegal, stolen, flammable, explosive, environmentally harmful, perishable or living, plus lithium-ion batteries, or anything containing one, and documents containing personal information.

There is one case where listing your goods matters. Irreplaceable items, or goods worth more than $1,000 in total, can only be stored if they are itemised and specifically insured. That list is for your insurance, and it protects you if you ever need to make a claim.

Even when it isn't required, keeping your own list is a good idea. Write it down as you pack, take a few photos, and keep a copy at home.
