If something goes missing from my container, who is actually responsible?

We will give you the straight answer. Under the standard SSAA storage agreement, which is used across the self storage industry, you store your goods at your own risk. That includes the risk of theft. Our liability is limited under the agreement, and you should not assume any insurance we have covers your belongings. That is why insurance is up to you, and why goods worth more than $1,000 in total must be itemised and specifically insured.

What we are responsible for is running a secure yard: high fences, a card-access gate, your own access card and alarm code, an anti-theft lockbox, and back-to-base alarms and cameras monitored 24/7.

You hold the only key to your container. That is a good thing, because nobody else can open it. It also means the strength of your padlock matters, so buy a good outdoor one that fits the lockbox properly.

If you ever think something is missing, call us straight away on 03 9010 6147, and report it to the police. Tell us what you found and when you last visited. We will help however we can. Then contact your insurer.

Two habits help. Keep a written list of what is in your container, with photos. And visit now and then, so you would notice quickly if anything changed.
