Do you insure my goods?

No. At Sunshine Self Storage, insurance is up to you. That is standard across the self storage industry, and it is part of how we keep our prices low. Under our standard SSAA storage agreement, you store your goods at your own risk, and you should not assume any insurance we have covers your belongings.

There is one rule that matters here. Irreplaceable items, or goods worth more than $1,000 in total, can only be stored if they are itemised and specifically insured. Most people's stored goods are worth more than that, so in practice, insurance is something to sort out before you move in.

You have two main options. First, check your home contents or business insurance. Some policies cover goods stored away from home, but many limit it or leave it out, so ask your insurer and get the answer in writing. Second, take out specialist storage insurance. Self Storage Insurance Australia (ssia.au, 1300 477 662) is one option.

Our job is to keep the yard secure. That means high fences, a card-access gate, your own access card and alarm code, an anti-theft lockbox for your padlock, and back-to-base alarms and cameras monitored 24/7. Insurance covers the things no yard can fully rule out.
