Can I install shelving or racking inside my container?

Yes, freestanding shelving and racking are a great idea, and many of our customers at Sunshine Self Storage use them. Shelves make the most of the 2.39m ceiling height, keep boxes off the floor, and make it much easier to find what you need.

The rule is no alterations. Under our standard SSAA storage agreement, you can't make changes to the container without our written consent. That means no drilling, screwing, bolting, welding or fixing anything to the walls, floor or roof. Freestanding units that stand on their own are fine.

A few tips. Choose sturdy steel shelving that is stable on its own, and put the heaviest items on the bottom shelves. Leave a small gap between the shelving and the walls so air can move. Leave a clear path down the middle so you can reach the back. Put the things you use most near the doors. Measure before you buy. A 20ft container is 5.9m long, 2.35m wide and 2.39m high inside, so shelving down one or both long walls usually works well.

When you move out, take your shelving with you and leave the container empty and clean.
