Should I use moisture absorbers in my container?
Sunshine Self Storage, located in Albion. Drive-up 10ft, 20ft and 40ft containers, open 5am to 9pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
They are a good idea, especially on longer stays. Our containers at Sunshine Self Storage are airtight, waterproof and dust-proof, with thick rubber door seals. That keeps rain and dust out, but it also means any moisture that goes in with your goods stays in. Moisture absorbers soak up some of that extra moisture and help prevent musty smells and mildew.
Use them as backup, not as the main defence. The most important step is packing everything dry. Then keep goods off the floor on pallets, leave a small gap between your goods and the walls, avoid rubbish bags and plastic sheeting, and wedge fridge and freezer doors open.
A few tips for using absorbers well. Spread several around the container rather than putting one in a corner. Put them near things that matter most, like furniture, clothing, books and mattresses. Check them each time you visit, and replace them when they are full. A full absorber that tips over can spill, so stand them where they won't get knocked, and keep them off timber and fabric.
You can buy moisture absorbers at supermarkets and hardware stores. We don't sell supplies, which helps keep our prices low.
