Should I put pallets on the floor before I load my goods?

Sunshine Self Storage, located in Albion. Drive-up 10ft, 20ft and 40ft containers, open 5am to 9pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Yes, it is a good idea. Our containers at Sunshine Self Storage are airtight and waterproof, but they are not climate controlled. Pallets lift your goods off the floor so air can move underneath, which helps stop moisture and condensation building up under boxes and furniture. They also protect your goods if anything is spilled or tracked in on wet shoes.

Our general packing advice is never to sit furniture directly on the floor. Pallets are the easiest way to do that.

A few tips. Use clean, dry pallets that are free of pests, dirt and food scraps. Old pallets from a damp garage can bring moisture and bugs in with them. Lay them flat and close together, so boxes have a stable base. Put heavy items on solid pallets, and spread the weight. Keep a small gap between the pallets and the walls. If you use a pallet jack or forklift, remember the 70mm lip at the door.

If you can't get pallets, a layer of timber battens or plastic under your goods is better than nothing.

When you move out, take your pallets with you. Nothing can be left outside your container, and the container needs to be left empty and clean.
